Youth Development
Working with Children and Youth
During this training, participants will learn about the physical, cognitive, and social-emotional developmental trends that are associated with different age-groups (K-8) and how these trends relate to day-to-day programming.
This module supports participants in exploring how to build positive, meaningful relationship with children and youth, in order to plan programs that best meet their needs and support the development of social-emotional skills and character building.
During this training, participants will learn about effective and dynamic communication tools, strategies to check for understanding, and activities that engage young people in communication to support their social-emotional development and character building.
During this training, participants will learn about the qualities of healthy self-esteem and some strategies for supporting young people as they develop positive self-esteem.
This training will give participants an understanding of the importance of working with children/youth to develop interpersonal skills, social awareness and teach them practical strategies for supporting this development.
During this training, participants will discuss what it means to be professional in the world of afterschool and learn how to support the families of the children and youth that they serve.
During this training, participants will develop strategies for observing children/youth and how to use those observations to understand behavior and develop appropriate programming.
During this training, participants will learn the importance of meeting the social-emotional and developmental needs of children and youth, and strategies to make sure that their needs are being met.

Behavior Guidance
This training will provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent unwanted behavior by meeting the physical and social-emotional needs of children and youth before they act out.
This training will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to be able to problem solve behavior concerns in their program, and help children and youth gain skills to solve problems.
To gain greater confidence in guiding behavior, staff must look at their personal actions and reactions to the behaviors of the children and youth with whom they work. This helps build social-emotional skills in both staff and children and youth.
Participants will gain skills for effective supervision of children/ youth by examining expected outcomes of working with children/youth, using tools for communicating expectations and applying techniques for dealing with problem behaviors.
During this training, participants will discuss the challenges of children and youth with disruptive behavior and learn strategies for effectively addressing these behaviors.
During this training, participants will gain understanding of a child/youth’s temperament by exploring philosophies on how to build self-management, self-awareness, foster friendships, develop social awareness and interpersonal skills, make developmentally-appropriate choices, understand natural/logical consequences, and to help them take responsibility for behaviors.
Job Readiness
During this training, participants will learn about the core competencies of working in an OST environment through examining four main principles of youth development.
During this training, participants will learn about creating a classroom environment that reflects a community. Participants will discuss how afterschool programs take a holistic approach to education and what affect that can have on learning.
During this training, participants will reflect on their own disciplinary tendencies and learn behavior management techniques to with a youth development lens.
During this training, participants will learn about the core competencies of working in an OST environment through examining four main principles of youth development.
Serving Older Youth
During this training participants in developing strategies to include school-age youth thoughts, ideas, and preferences in program delivery and planning.
Social-Emotional Learning and Character Development
This session will introduce participants to social-emotional skills and their relationship to the California Quality Standards for Expanded Learning Programs. Participants will be able to articulate what social-emotional skills look like in youth and the California Quality Standards for Expanded Learning Programs that contribute to the skill development in youth.
During this module, participants will explore program practices that support social-emotional and character skill development. Participants will use their results from a self-reflection tool to identify actions they can take to strengthen their abilities to support social-emotional and character skill development.

Note: Participants must complete the Expanded Learning 360/365 self-reflection before coming to the training.
During this module, participants will learn about how young people’s responses affect personal emotion and behavior, how to introduce and implement group agreements, and share current strategies and resources to support the development of young people’s self-awareness and self-management skills.
During this module, participants will learn about how culturally grounded beliefs and background affect our practice with youth, how to help raise our awareness of those factors, and share current strategies and resources to support the development young people’s social-awareness and interpersonal skills.
During this module, participants will learn about what self-efficacy and growth mindset are, explore our own mindset and the potential impact it has on youth, and share current strategies and resources to support the development young people’s growth mindset and self-efficacy.
Academics and Enrichment
Delivering Quality Programs
During this training, participants will learn about the six developmental categories and how to plan thematic curriculum for out-of-school-time programs.
During this training, participants will understand the importance of the delivery and debriefing of an activity to help children/youth make meaning. This module is available as an on-site training and eLearning training.
Supporting Academic Programming
This module offers a basic overview of the 6 curriculum areas as defined by the California Department of Education. Participants will experience a simple activity from each area and discuss the importance of a well-balanced program.
During this module presentation, participants develop an understanding of California State Standards and how to integrate them into a balanced out-of-school time program.
During this training, participants examine the importance of Homework Assistance in out-of-school time programs. Participants will learn strategies and skills to provide effective homework assistance.
During this module presentation, participants will learn about language arts standards and ways in which afterschool programs can support mastery of those standards.

Participants learn about the research behind language development, and will gain an understanding of research-based strategies to support English language development and provide academic support to English Learners.

This training module will prepare participants to deliver the activities from Energy and You as well as connect families to resources to help save energy and money.

Equity and Inclusion
Including Children with Special Needs
During this training, participants will discuss the law regarding inclusion as well as the attitude needed to create an inclusive environment in school-age care/afterschool by making reasonable accommodations for children with disabilities.
Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Oppression
This training will provide participants the opportunity to explore their own relationship to safety and support, set group agreements for the series, and discover their FRAME.
During this training participants will further explore their “FRAMES” created in module 3.5.1 and explore diversity through the use of quotations and small group discussions.
This training deeply explores privilege in order to help participants develop their own self-awareness around their privilege and how it impacts their work with children and youth. There is only one activity for the entire training.
This topic exposes participants to the multiple ways privilege and power play out in the form of oppression. Participants will reflect on how privilege, power, and oppression play out in their lives and how they connect to their work with children and youth.
During this training, participants will explore the impact of cliques in their programs, how they are formed, how they affect individual children and youth, and how they impact the safe and supportive program environment.
This module was revised in 2016 to incorporate social-emotional learning, character building and Quality Standards for Expanded Learning in California as part of CalSAC's work with the Expanded Learning 360/365 project.
Creating Culturally Sensitive and Equitable Programs
During this training, participants will reflect on their own identity, and address the extent to which culture impacts their lives and the lives of children/youth. They will also develop their social awareness skills by critically evaluating the ways in which individuals of diverse backgrounds relate to one another.
During this training, participants will address issues that prevent the program from creating an environment that embraces diversity, access and equity. Participants will attempt to develop strategies that support that environment.
During this training, participants will examine how to implement activities designed to promote cultural sensitivity, diversity and/or equity understanding and support self- and social awareness among children and youth.

This training will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to address bullying by understanding and identifying the problem of bullying.

Participants gain a deeper understanding of the diversity of the English Learner population, their various needs, and ways to learn more about their own English Learner population.
Participants learn about the research behind language development, and will gain an understanding of research-based strategies to support English language development and provide academic support to English Learners.
Participants explore the benefits of connecting young people to their home languages and cultures, and will learn how to effectively engage with EL families and communities.

This training offers a basic overview of the roles and responsibilities of the site leader/supervisor and how those roles support a culture of team excellence and mutual support.

Leading Afterschool Programs
Taking time to discover your values, goals, skills, talents, and strengths will help you to understand the type of leader you are and help you become the type of leader you desire to be. Leadership is not a one-dimensional trait. It is an on-going process involving continuous learning. So how do you go about beginning to discover what type of leader you are? As with any journey, you start at the beginning with a single step.
This is a two-part workshop. The first half is an informal assessment of leadership styles relating to the animal kingdom. The second is a more formal assessment of work styles.
During this training, participants will explore what it means to be a leader, how to be reflective and intentional about their work, and how to communicate effectively with others.
Leading with Social-Emotional Learning and Character Development
Those in leadership positions have a responsibility to both lead and manage. Participants will understand the differences between the two, and the steps we can take to cultivate both. Participants will explore how leaders create safe, supportive environments by modeling self-awareness, interpersonal skills and growth mindset in how we lead and manage.
During this module, participants will explore the importance of social-emotional learning and character skills in our roles as supervisors. Participants will reflect on their personal roadblocks and potential pitfalls as a supervisor as well as be introduced to a management framework to help strengthen their supervision.
This module introduces participants to a coaching process that includes an awareness to social-emotional learning and character of adults. Designed for those in leadership and/or supervisory positions, participants will practice skills needed in coaching to support an environment for adult staff to learn and grow.
During this module, participants will explore the importance of creating safe environments for adult staff to experience and thrive amongst change. Strategies and tools will be shared for participants to successfully diagnose and navigate various stages and types of change.
Quality Programming
Creating Program Environments
There are three essential out-of-school time program environments; indoor, outdoor, and the interpersonal. This training will help staff to enhance the out-of-school time program environment for children and youth.
Out-of-school time programs share space and facilities that are used by other people and for other purposes during the school day. Learning how to accomplish this in a collegial, congenial way is essential for effective programming.

During this training, participants will look at schedules to determine if they are providing both sufficient structure yet flexibility to accommodate a wide range of activities and address the social-emotional, physical, and skill building needs of children and youth.
During this training, participants will learn what evaluation is and why it is important for programs. They will also learn the principles of evaluation in order to begin to develop evaluation criteria for their own program and gain tools to meet the Continuous Quality Improvement standard for Expanded Learning Programs in California.

Establishing Partnerships with Families, Schools and Communities
During this training, participants will explore what it means to build authentic relationships with families, practice the foundational the skills needed to do this and explore biases that might prohibit them from developing authentic relationships with families.
During this training, participants will gain a deeper understanding of human needs and the needs of their families and begin fostering empathy for their families.
During this training, participants will explore what it means to center belonging at the heart of their family engagement and strategies to implement in their program to create a sense of belonging for families.
During this training, participants will discuss out-of-school time program connections with the school day stakeholders and how to strengthen those partnerships.

Supporting Mental Health and Wellness
During this module, participants will understand the connection between our internal brain function and the behaviors we observe in programs as well as understand the impact stress and trauma has on a young person.
During module, participants will understand the importance of protective factors and how their practices in program support the mental health and wellness of youth.
During module, participants will explore the importance of creating safety in their program for young people and how their program promotes emotional and physical safety.
During this module, participants will gain an understanding of when a young person’s mental health needs require professional support, explore resources in their community and create an action plan to cultivate partnerships with resources in their community.

During this training, participants will learn about elements of high-quality summer programs and effective tools to guide programs in their ongoing development of quality programming.
