Building Relationships with Children and Youth

Training Module

This module supports participants in exploring how to build positive, meaningful relationship with children and youth, in order to plan programs that best meet thier needs and support the development of social-emotional skills and character building.

This module was developed as part of the this module was developed as part of the California Department of Education/Child Development Division School-Age Training Project and revised in 2016 to incorporate social-emotional learning, character building and Quality Standards for Expanded Learning in California. 

 In this training participants will:

  • Be able to utilize tips, techniques and activities to help them build relationships with children and youth.

  • Understand the importance of taking the time to build positive relationships with children and youth that support the development of social-emotional and character skills.

Content Overview:

The Power of Relationship Building

Participants identify what constitutes a positive relationships between program staff and children and youth, behavior that contributes to building relationships, and ways to develop relationships. 

5 Things in Common Activity

This energizing activity serves as a tool to demonstrate the kinds of activities that help to build positive relationships between staff and children and youth. 

Action Plan Activity

Participants will learn and share concrete ideas for holding themselves responsible for putting their ideas into action back at their programs.

Many children and youth spend more hours in school-age care and afterschool programs (including summers and school vacations) than they do in their regular school day classes, and in many cases more than they do with their parents or guardians during waking hours. An environment that fosters positive relationships between children, youth and adults is critical to creating a high quality program. Interactions with adults strongly influence the views children/youth have about themselves and the world. 

By the end of this module, participants will:

  • Understand the importance of taking the time to build positive relationships with children and youth.

  • Be able to utilize tips, techniques and activities to help them build relationships with children and youth.
