On-Site Training Module
This module was developed as part of the California Department of Education/Child Development Division School-Age Training Project and revised in 2016 to incorporate social-emotional learning, character building and Quality Standards for Expanded Learning in California and specific language, examples and tips for summer and year-round learning programs.
During this training, participants will understand the importance of the delivery and debriefing of an activity to help children/youth make meaning.
In this training participants will:
- Build skills in identifying and adapting a variety of methods of presenting activities to children/youth;
- Explore and share reviewing strategies to use with activities for children/youth.
Content Overview:
Gallery Walk
Small groups of participants will brainstorm a variety of possible activities that could be placed under each of the six presentation methods: Child-Directed Activities, Free Play, Clubs or Special Interest, Group Games, Discovery Centers, learning and Activity Centers. This will give participants time to think through different approaches to presenting material to children/youth and make connections to the Point-of-Service Quality Standards for Expanded Learning in California.
Reviewing Strategies
Participants will learn high-quality strategies for reviewing activities with children/youth. This will provide useful tips that staff can put into immediate action at their programs.
Action Plan
Participants will put together an Action Plan that they can take back to their program and implement immediately.

There is no “one size fits all” approach to working with children and youth, and this is especially true when it comes to how we present activities. To meet the needs of the varied ages, personalities, backgrounds, preferences, and special needs of children/youth, staff members need to use many different methods of presenting activities (Kids’ Time 1994, page 60).
By the end of this module, participants will:
- Build skills in identifying and adapting a variety of methods of presenting activities to children and youth.
- Explore and share reviewing strategies to use with activities for children and youth.
