This module was revised in 2016 to incorporate social-emotional learning, character building and Quality Standards for Expanded Learning in California as part of CalSAC's work with the Expanded Learning 360/365 project.
During this training, participants will develop strategies for observing children/youth and how to use those observations to understand behavior and develop appropriate programming.
In this training participants will:
- Understand the purpose of observation
- Learn several strategies to apply when observing children/ youth.
- Learn to become objective, descriptive, and intentional
Content Overview:
A Penny For Your Thoughts
Participants will be introduced to the topic of observation by attempting to describe an everyday object without seeing it.
Observation Overview
Participants will be lead in an interactive lecture to deepen their understanding of the importance of objectivity in observation.
Object Observation
Participants will discuss some strategies for effective observation and practice observing and recording their observations to improve their ability to make observations.
In Touch With the Experts
Participants will have an opportunity to share knowledge with each other by focusing on one aspect of observation.
Applying Observation Practices
Participants will apply their new knowledge to a variety of scenarios.
