Out-of-school time programs play a central role in supporting a young person’s mental health and are a core component in the mental health support system for young people. Youth development staff are the caring and consistent adults who, when trained effectively, create the protective factors that help young people heal from trauma.

CalSAC’s Wellness Network training topics strengthen staff’s understanding of their role both in the prevention of mental health risk factors and in helping youth cope and heal from stressful and traumatic events. Our training content equips staff with:

  • Information about how trauma and stressful events impact a young person’s mental and emotional well-being

  • How out-of-school time programs build protective factors that support a young person’s ability to cope and heal from these experiences

  • How protective factors align with foundational youth development practices.

  • Strategies to support advocacy on behalf of youth and families in distress.

Free Mental Health and Social Emotional Learning Modules through June 2025

CalSAC has developed training topics that build a shared understanding and common language among out-of-school time staff to support young people’s mental health wellness. These topics make connections between positive youth development and successful trauma-informed practices; allow space for staff to explore their personal experiences with mental health, systems, and stigmas; explore “risk factors” that impact youth and adults’ mental health; and share how Expanded Learning programs play a key role in positive mental health wellness.
