This module was developed as part of the California Department of Education/Child Development Division School-Age Training Project and was revised in 2017 to incorporate specific language, examples and tips for summer and year-round learning programs.
During this module, participants will identify potential service learning projects with safety considerations and create a action plan for a service learning project they can implement at their site.
In this training participants will:
- Understand the intrinsic and extrinsic rewards to performing service.
- Generate a list of potential service projects and recipients that fit your program.
- Create a specific plan for a project, using a service learning planning tool.
Content Overview:
Service Learning Reflection
Participants will reflection on a time they have been impacted with a service provide for them and a time they have performed a service for another. The reflection will set the stage for a discussion on the intrinsic and extrinsic rewards that performing service brings.
Service Learning in Action
Participants will review sample service learning projects to become familiar with the Service Learning Planning Tool. They will break into groups and discuss the components of the planning tool in relationship to the selected service project they are assigned to.
Service Learning Carousel
Participants will generate ideas of potential service learning projects in their area in which their program can implement. This activity will help participants learn the key elements in selecting a proper service learning project for the children/youth they serve.
Creating a Plan for a Service Project
Participants will select a service learning project the group has identified and create a action plan using the planning tool provided. The goal is to have participants become familiar with using the planning tool and to have the group leave the session with a number of service learning projects they can implement at their sites.
