We Belong 100: Supporting Social-Awareness and Interpersonal Skills

Training Module

During this module, participants will learn about how culturally grounded beliefs and background affect our practice with youth, how to help raise our awareness of those factors, and share current strategies and resources to support the development young people’s social-awareness and interpersonal skills.

This module was developed as part of the Expanded Learning 360/365 project, revised in 2016 to specific language, examples and tips for summer and year-round learning programs and revised in 2019 to incorporate language to support mental health and wellness.

In this training participants will:

  • Understand how culturally grounded beliefs and background affect our practice with youth;

  • Learn one tool to help raise our own personal awareness of factors affecting our practice with youth;

  • Share current strategies and resources to support I Belong skill building with youth.

Content Overview:

Establishing Agreements

Participants will review a list of group agreements and consider how they might be used to support the development of young people’s social-awareness and interpersonal skills.

Exploring Personal Competence

Participants will read the Incident Poem and reflect on their own childhood memories through partner interviews to increase their awareness of how those experiences may be impacting their work with young people.

Focused Conversation

Participants will review the Focused Conversation tool as a method of asking questions that allows for multiple perspectives.

Program Practice and Resource Sharing

Participants will share and discuss the strategies identified, current practices, and resources for supporting youth in social-awareness and interpersonal skills.

eLearning Module

This course focuses on participants’ Personal Competency of understanding how awareness of cultural beliefs and background affect practice with youth. It also sets the foundation for how participants implement practices to support the development young people’s social-awareness and interpersonal skills.

By the end of this course, participants will:

  • Understand how culturally grounded beliefs and background affect our practice with children and youth.

  • Explore a tool to help raise awareness of factors affecting their practice with children and youth.

  • Learn strategies and resources to support I Belong skill building with children and youth.
