Agency Description: Sierra Nevada Journeys is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that delivers innovative outdoor, science-based education programs for youth to develop critical thinking skills and to inspire natural resource stewardship. Through multiple points of contact, our classroom and virtual-based programs, overnight science camps, professional development for teachers, and parent engagement opportunities surround students with resources they need to succeed. All programs are designed to foster higher cognition and build long-term student achievement. Of the 24,000 children that annually participate in our programs, 74 percent come from communities that face financial barriers and 70 percent are BIPOC, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. Also, 13 percent of the individuals who attend our programs, are living with a disability.

Job Description

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
• Identify opportunities for intentional programmatic experiences in support of social-emotional learning
• Experience in facilitating and implementing intentional group debriefs and within the boundaries of participants lived experiences
• Protect the physical and emotional safety of students during all activities
• Act as a role model and mentor to the students
• Manage day-to-day program logistics, acting as a liaison between Sierra Nevada Journeys, Summer Search, and program partners
• Safely drive students and gear in large SUVs with limited visibility to destinations throughout the I-80 corridor (from the Bay Area to Plumas National Forest and beyond).
• Create a positive and inclusive group dynamic
• Demonstrate responsible leadership and judgment


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• 21-years-old or older by May, 2022
• 1-2 years of experience leading multi-day backpacking experiences in varying terrain and environmental factors
• A minimum certification of Wilderness First Responder & CPR
• Applicants must have and maintain an excellent driving record with no major infractions of unsafe conduct. You will be required to drive a van and possibly tow a gear trailer throughout the course
• Excellent communication and organization skills
• Experience facilitating programs in backcountry settings with diverse participant groups
• Successfully pass a background check
• Work independently with a high degree of initiative
• Work with limited time off
• Work closely and cohesively with co-leader throughout trips
• All employees are required to attest in writing they have up-to-date immunizations against the diseases required for public school attendance in the state in which they work and have received a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment.
