Job Description: The Recreation Supervisor is a management (exempt) position which has responsibility over a broad area of program activities. The position reports to the Recreation Director and exercises direct supervision over full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees, as well as volunteers.
The current vacancy is in the Childcare Administration Division. The Division oversees and supports a variety of childcare, before– and after- school programming, preschool, summer camps and related programming and events for over a thousand children each year at different program sites around the City. The Recreation Supervisor assigned to this Division will oversee these program areas by offering social, physical, and educational opportunities for personal enrichment through recreation, enrichment activities, and special events and will also take a lead role in various Recreation Department initiatives that support Citywide strategic goals.

Job Responsibilities and Qualifications: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (DUTIES):

Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

Develop, plan, supervise, implement, and evaluate recreation programs, activities, and/or systems.
Establish schedules and methods for providing community and recreation services
Oversee assigned staff at recreation and community facilities, programs, services, and activities; including child- care, before- and after-school care, enrichment classes, instructional classes, youth programs, summer programs, and/or community events
Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities; recommend appropriate service and staffing levels
Participate in the development, administration, and oversight of assigned division budget.
Prepares grant and special funding applications and monitors expenditures
Participate in ensuring compliance with relevant health, safety, and licensing laws and guidelines.
Maintain and update all records required by Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge Of:

Principles and practices of recreation and community service program development and administration, including program implementation, review and evaluation, budgeting, and purchasing.
Techniques for providing a high level of customer service and effectively dealing with individuals of various ages, various socio-economic and ethnic groups, and effectively representing the City when in contact with the public.

Abilities:

To supervise, train, mentor, plan, organize, schedule, assign, review, and evaluate the work of staff, contractors, and volunteers.
To assist in developing and implementing goals, objectives, practices, policies, procedures, and work standards to achieve departmental and Citywide strategic goals
To organize and prioritize a variety of projects and multiple tasks in an effective and timely manner; organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.

Experience and Education Guidelines:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:
Equivalent to three (3) years of responsible recreational programming experience, including one year of lead or supervisory experience.

Education:
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in recreation administration, child development, psychology, sociology, gerontology, public or business administration, or a related field.

Licenses/Certificates/ Other requirements:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver's License by time of appointment.
May be required to possess and maintain a valid California Driver's Class B License.
Must obtain EMSA First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate for infant, child, and adult within three (3) months of hire. Must maintain and renew certifications as required.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, certification as licensed childcare center director issued by the State of California, within one (1) year of employment.
