Scientific Adventures for Girls works to remove systemic barriers to all girls’ participation in STEM starting in kindergarten, engage them through hands-on learning, increase their positive attitudes toward STEM, and equip them with 21st century skills. We teach engaging, hands-on after school STEM classes to girls in K-6th grades at elementary schools throughout the East Bay.

Job Description

SAfG is seeking an after school Instructor to engage elementary-aged girls and teach hands-on STEM activities. You choose how many days a week you would like to teach. Full time and Part Time available. Flexible days, afternoon hours. In-person and possible virtual sites throughout the East Bay (Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Richmond, and San Leandro). A teaching credential is not required.

COMPENSATION:
Full-time or Part-time, hourly employment: $21 - $27 per hour (dependent on experience)

Job Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach/deliver project-based STEM activities virtually or on site at elementary schools in the East Bay (includes kitting, set-up, clean up).

  • Promote the mission and scientist mindset of SAfG in each class

  • Utilize facilitator guides available for each class and differentiate instruction as needed to improve the student experience or accommodate individual students.

  • Supervise and direct teaching assistant, role models and volunteers in the classroom.

  • Assist in the organization and kitting of STEM supplies and kits at the main office and storage facility and responsible for transportation of STEM supplies to school sites.

  • Attend all staff meetings and programmatic meetings as scheduled.

  • Ability to teach virtually or in-person at schools throughout the East Bay (Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Richmond and San Leandro).

  • Availability to teach after school hours (2:30-5:30pm for most days and 12:45 - 3:30pm for early dismissal days).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completed (or near completed) Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in Education or in STEM related field.

  • A minimum of one year of experience teaching after school programming with social-emotional content and hands-on STEM activities to girls in K-6th grades

  • Experience teaching and building relationships with girls from underserved backgrounds preferred.

  • Possess the ability to establish rapport with a wide range of students and create an inclusive learning environment

  • Commitment to educational equity and programming for girls

  • Ability to maintain an excellent work ethic, a high level of energy and enthusiasm

  • Experience in emergent curriculum, project-based or inquiry-based learning a plus

  • For in-person teaching: valid drivers license and reliable car

  • For virtual teaching: experience teaching in a virtual setting

  • Preferred Qualification: Spanish-speaking, but not mandatory
