The City of Martinez Recreation Department is seeking motivated, energetic, team-oriented Camp Leaders who enjoy working and engaging with children and are serious about having fun! Specific responsibilities include assisting and actively participating with first through sixth grade students in structured activities such as games, camp songs, arts & crafts, swimming and field trips in a recreational park setting.
Under immediate supervision, performs routine support duties for recreational programs, events, and activities; directs and/or leads the activities of a program; organizes and implements program elements and oversees participants; prepares buildings, fields, and facilities for scheduled activities/events; performs recordkeeping and scorekeeping duties and performs related work as required.
Representative Duties
The following list of duties is intended to describe the various types of work that may be performed and is not intended to be an all-inclusive list of duties.
- Oversees participants and spectators in a recreation program, activity or facility.
- Provides customer service and enforces rules and regulations.
- Maintains a safe program environment and facility; conducts safety checks; administers first aid as required.
- Assists in issuing, receiving, and collecting equipment and supplies.
- Assists in setting up, taking down, and cleaning up recreational facilities, as assigned.
- Performs routine administrative duties such as phone and counter reception and cash handling
- Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Must be a minimum of 15 years old. Experience working with children in a sport setting, day camp, childcare program, youth program or summer camp is desired. Appropriate clearances from background check/fingerprinting and documentation of a negative skin test for TB within the last two (2) years are required.
- Be able to obtain certification in American Red Cross Adult/Pediatric First Aid/CPR and AED or equivalent within 90 days of employment.
Knowledge of:
- Common sports, games and recreation activities appropriate for all ages.
- Youth supervision and leadership techniques.
- Concepts of program risk management and safe work practices.
Ability to:
- Supervise and lead youth of various ages.
- Communicate effectively and possess excellent interpersonal skills while interacting with program participants, co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
- Handle and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Provide reliable and dependable assistance to the assigned program areas.
- Provide creativity and enthusiasm to the assigned program areas.
- Work outdoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions.
Supplemental Information
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office and/or recreational facility setting and use standard office and/or recreation equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Must possess the physical stamina to lift and move tables and chairs and arrange facilities for community events and/or meetings. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and walk on uneven surfaces to participate in recreational activities; and push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees may work in the field and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperatures, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids rendering First Aid and CPR and are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
WORKING CONDITIONS
May be required to work a varied schedule of hours, which may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, at a variety of City facilities.
FLSA: NON-EXEMPT, TEMPORARY SEASONAL
EFFECTIVE: MARCH 2023
Maximum of 1000 hours per fiscal year. This position is not eligible for City benefits. Paid sick leave will be accrued in accordance with the Healthy Workplaces/Healthy Families Act of 2014 (Assembly Bill1522).
