We Are 100: Supporting Self-Awareness and Self-Management

Training Module

During this module, participants will learn about how young people’s responses affect personal emotion and behavior, how to introduce and implement group agreements, and share current strategies and resources to support the development of young people’s self-awareness and self-management skills.

This module was developed as part of the Expanded Learning 360/365 project, revised in 2016 to specific language, examples and tips for summer and year-round learning programs and revised in 2019 to incorporate language to support mental health and wellness.

In this training participants will:

  • Understand how young people’s responses affect personal emotion and behavior;

  • Explore how group agreements and reflection can support young people and adults in practicing self-awareness and self-management;

  • Share current strategies and resources to support I Am skill building with youth.

Content Overview:

Establishing Agreements

Participants will review a list of group agreements and consider how they might be used to support the development of self-awareness and self-management.

Exploring Personal Competence

Participants will reflect on how youth emotions and behaviors can cause a negative response in them. Participants will also identify their own strategies to respond instead of react to particular behaviors or actions. 

Program Practice and Resource Sharing

Participants will share and discuss the strategies identified, current practices, and resources for supporting youth in self-management and self-awareness.

eLearning Module

This course focuses on participants’ Personal Competency to support the self-awareness and self-management of children and youth. It’s important for OST staff to reflect on their own biases and responses to child and youth behavior in their programs. In this course, participants reflect on their own self-awareness and self-management skills when working with children and youth, and learn strategies to enhance those social-emotional skills in themselves. They also learn program practices to help children and youth enhance their self-awareness and self-management.

By the end of this course, participants will:

  • Understand how young people’s responses affect personal emotion and behavior.

  • Learn how group agreements can support self-awareness and self-management in children and youth.

  • Learn strategies and resources to support I Am skill building with children and youth.
