CALSAC

Social-Emotional Learning and Character Development

In partnership with the Expanded Learning 360°/365 collaborative, CalSAC and Temescal Associates has developed nine new on-site and eLearning training modules to help support staff and young people’s development of these social-emotional learning and character development skills. In addition to developing these new training modules, we’ve revised 30 of our on-site training modules to incorporate social-emotional learning, character building and the Quality Standards for Expanded Learning in California.

Professional Learning Community

Strengthening staff’s competencies and practices around social-emotional learning and character development is integral to helping youth thrive in Expanded Learning Programs. Investing in a Professional Learning Community (PLC) focused on the nine new social-emotional learning and character development modules gives participants an opportunity to dig deeper into the social-emotional learning and character development concepts and content. Participants share their experiences and apply learning in between the scheduled training sessions. There are two PLC tracks available for both frontline and site coordinator level staff. The PLC training model is illustrated below.

Regional Trainings

CalSAC established a goal of delivering 700 hours of social-emotional learning and character development training to the field by the end June in an effort to strengthen the capacity of the field to support young people.

Investment in professional development training is even more important at this time when staff may be struggling to respond to the needs of the communities they serve. High-quality expanded learning programs ensure that all children and youth are welcomed into safe environments and program staff are equipped with strategies to help young people thrive.

Attend one of the regional trainings scheduled in your community to receive social-emotional learning and character development trainings.
