CalSAC's first Los Angeles-based workforce development initiative, LA Scholars, piloted during the summer 2008. This program was a partnership with the Community Development Department, L.A. Unified School District (LAUSD), L.A. Community College District, L.A. Area Chamber of Commerce and the L.A. County Federation of Labor (AFL-CIO).

The program served over 300 LAUSD recent and incoming high school graduates who are interested in working with children and youth afterschool. The L.A. Scholars attended college preparatory classes at one of seven community colleges throughout Los Angeles for six weeks during summer.

In addition to classes, they also attended over 30 hours of CalSAC training and completed 24 hours of job shadowing as LAUSD employees in local programs preparing them to work with youth. Upon completion of the six-week program, CalSAC hosted an L.A. Scholars job fair with afterschool employers to match them up with permanent employment opportunities.
